Set in Burundi in the early 1990s, Small Country follows 10-year-old Gabriel, a boy enjoying an ordinary childhood filled with friends, adventure, stolen mangoes, and neighborhood mischief.

But as political tensions rise and violence spreads through Burundi and neighboring Rwanda, Gabriel’s world begins to change. The childhood he once knew is slowly replaced by fear, loss, displacement, and questions about identity and belonging.

Through Gabriel’s eyes, Gaël Faye explores innocence, family, identity, war, and what happens when history enters the lives of ordinary people.
